Planning for our Future

Farmers across the Marble Aquifer

APPROACH

Farmers Across the Marble Aquifer (FAMA) is a local catchment group in the Golden Bay area of New Zealand. FAMA is taking active responsibility for protecting Te Waikoropupū Springs and the Tākaka catchment - working together to farm sustainably for future generations while caring for this precious taonga.

The water quality in our springs and catchment is in the top 1% in Australasia, placing it among the best in New Zealand!

In just five years, we’ve reduced nitrogen loss by 17% from baseline, equivalent to around 90 tonnes less nitrogen entering the system, or roughly 200 tonnes of urea.
Over the past ten years, our farmers have made wide-ranging, voluntary changes to how they farm, with a shared focus on protecting water quality, strengthening ecosystems, and improving long-term farm resilience.
